Rail transport as a major mode of transport, its development direction is high speed and heavy haul. Neither high-speed nor heavy haul railway requires a high level of ride comfort. In order to maintain high ride, the railway must be lain smooth-going and grind precision. Wheel wear must be compensated to improve the precision of rail grinding. China’s railway mileage is6%of the world, but it completes25%of the world’s traffic. It’s the busiest rail, the time for rail maintenance is limited. On-line detection and automatic compensation for wheel wear will greatly save grinding time. On-line detection of rail grinding wheel wear, not only can increase the level of automation of rail grinding and grinding quality, but also improve the efficiency of rail grinding. It’s significance to China’s railway maintenance.In this paper, to the problem of grinding wheel wear in rail grinding, the relationship of actual cutting depth decrement and wheel wear was studied, and the self-reference three-point was proposed, at last, influencing factors in the measurement process of the self-reference three-point method were simulation analyzed. The main work and results of this paper are as follows:1. The importance of grinding wheel wear compensation was proposed. The characteristics of rail grinding and the influences of grinding wheel wear to rail grinding was analyzed. Through the Comparisons of wheel wear compensation strategy and measurement program, on-line detection of wheel wear based on self-reference three-point was proposed.2. The self-reference three-point method theoretical model and the self-reference three-point method to measure the actual cut depth model was proposed. Influencing factors in the measurement process of the self-reference three-point method were analyzed and simulated. At last parameters of the measuring car were decided.3. The relationship model of grinding wheel wear and grinding wheel actual cut depth decrease was established. Confirmatory experiment was designed. The influence factors of grinding conditions to grinding wheel wear measurement were analyzed.4. Factors causing measurement error was analyzed, and methods eliminating errors were researched. To verify the validity of these methods, simulations of error elimination method were done, measuring strategies were proposed.In the paper, the self-reference three-point method was applied to rail grinding wheel wear measurement. It’s a new idea for the measurement of wheel wear. It’s great significance to improve the quality and efficiency of rail grinding and automation of equipment.
