As an important part of pressure vessel, the qualities of the vessel heads have great influence on pressure vessel structure integrity. In this paper, ANSYS, AutoCAD and Visual Basic were all used to solve the problems that were raised during design, optimization and detect. The problems are as follows:There is a dispute for using the butterfly-shaped head to replace the standard ellipse head in the pressure vessel design. There are variables results during optimal design of torispherical heads. The shape’s deviation of the heads, the diameter of the head and the height of the head are all limited in GB150. The measure board and steel tape are used in traditional way of detection, which needs so much work. Besides, the larger measure board will be easier out of shape.The chief content of this paper are as follows:1. Finite element analysis was carried out on more than20different shape parameters torispherical heads using ANSYS, and the JB4732was used as the criteria for the strength and stability of the heads. The numerical results showed that, if the butterfly-shaped heads can satisfy the shape’s deviation of the requirement that ASME made for the standard ellipsoidal head on the condition that the height of the torispherical head is equal to the height of ellipsoidal head, they can replace the standard ellipsoidal heads with the same material and the same wall thickness safely.2. Two important parameters of torispherical head that are Ri and r(r, interior radius of transition corner; Ri, interior radius of spherical crown area) has been optimized by the module of the large general-purpose finite-element software ANSYS, targeting the strength and stability of the head, in this paper. The result of the optimization shows a new torispherical head, which improved the stability of the edge of the head adopting the strength of the head, providing reference value on production practices.3. Laser ranging is used in conjunction with photoelectric encoder to obtain the two-dimensional outline drawing of vessel head. The mechanical rotation system is valuable to realize the hardware of scan. The software was designed in Visual Basic environment. According to the comparison of the measurement and actual value, some details of the software were changed to make the testing system more accurate. After error analysis, the testing system presents good performance in test.
