A Preliminary Study On The Chen Fang’s Family Buildings’ Protection And Utilization

The core figure of this article is Chen Fang who is an outstanding representative ofoverseas Chinese in China. He was the wealthiest man in Hawaii, and the leader of the localChinese. Moreover, he had made outstanding political achievements in Hawaii. Chen Fang’sfamily buildings was built when he returned home in his later years, including the Archwaybuilt by Emperor Guangxu who had made decrees to commend Chen Fang’s virtue for threetimes and Chen Cemetery. This architectural complex has typical Chinese and Westernarchitectural features. In2006, the State Council announced that it is the national key culturalrelics protection unitsOn the basis of detailed descriptions of Chen Fang and his home ancient buildings, thispaper carefully studies and explores the approaches and effects used to protect and developthis ancient architecture, thus launches a series of thinking related to these measures andeffects. After doing comprehensive studies of the ancient building protection policy anddrawing on the protection and development of the domestic and foreign cases, this paperdiscusses the protected model, development model and management model series specific toChen Fang’s homesteads ancient buildings, and then explores the pros and cons of theseprotection and development methods. Protection work of Chen Fang’s home ancient buildingshas insisted the principle of "repair the old as before", and executed stringently according to“minimum intervention" during the process of protective work, and maximized thepreservation of the original appearance of the ancient buildings, and protected the building inline with national protective concepts and principles, which provides a valuable examples forthe protection of similar architecture.Since the protection and development work of the of Chen Fang’s home ancientbuildings, are mainly supported by private capital, there was no over-exploitation,inadequately protected, which is an excellent example of the introduction of private capital.But enterprises as the mainstay of the operation and management mode there are also strongutilitarian disadvantages, the government is to establish a sound selection, supervision andmanagement system refine this mode. Chen Fang’s home ancient buildings as touristattractions use patterns through a series of measures it has high visibility and value in use, butits tourism industry chain is not formed, the tourism elements are not complete; tourismindustry with not established, but also did not form the core scenic radiation effects; the ChenFang’s home ancient buildings travel product development there too single mode, visitors toparticipate in such issues, this paper put forward some suggestions for improvement.
