A Study On Identification Criteria Of Excellent Modern Architectures

Excellent Modern Architectures were brought out since modern times of China by theimpact of science, technology, ideas and concept brought by the western modernization andindustrialization. They have irreplaceable values due to recording a large number of precioushistorical and cultural information. They are the products caused by the combination oftraditional Chinese culture and modern Western culture, the witnesses of the China’smodernization and one of the important carriers which record Chinese five-thousand-yearcivilization and history.Nowadays, a lot of excellent modern architectures have been dismantled unlawfully orrenovated and utilized improperly, resulting in a huge loss of such heritage. The cause of thissituation has two aspects. On one hand the particularities of excellent modern architectureslead to public’s difficult understanding of their values, on the other hand our architecturalheritage protection system is still in the process of perfection and modern architecturalheritage protection system is not yet perfect. Therefore, an institution directed towardsexcellent modern architectures is urgent to establish to constrain the process of urbandevelopment, in which we should guarantee the status of excellent modern architectures bydetermination, then, protect and utilize them by using reasonable management means.As a part of the research topics “A Study on identification Criteria and Protection＆Management Methods of Excellent Modern Architectures” of Ministry of Construction, thisarticle aims at establishing standards about determination of Excellent Modern Architecturesat national level and providing the basis of laws and regulations for the protection of China’sexcellent modern architectural heritages.This thesis focuses on the following aspects:1. The thesis summarizes and analyzes the current situation of our architectural heritageprotection system. It determines protected objects’ range of Excellent ModernArchitectures, basing on the range of the existing protection system of all kinds ofheritages.2. Through analyzing the domestic and international research on the value of the architectural heritage, this thesis sums up the value structure of excellent modernarchitectures according to the particularities of modern architectures. It has prepared theground for the construction of index system of the identification criteria.3. According to the actual situation, the thesis analyses the contents and summarizes thesame and different points of local standards which has been promulgated andimplemented by local governments. On the one hand it can provide a reference fornational standard, on the other hand national standard and local standards can beorganically combined and avoid unnecessary conflicts.4. Constructing an identification criterion of Excellent Modern Architectures. First, thecontents of the identification criteria were presupposed through the above research. Then,we interviewed local experts and scholars with the criteria presupposed. Finally, thecriterion was modified according to the interviews and the final outcome is determined.This paper conducts identification criteria of china’s Excellent Modern Architectures,through researches of our architectural heritages protection system, analyses of the valuestructure of modern architectures, summaries of local standards and references of domesticand foreign advanced evaluation criteria. Finally, we chose a part of the modern architecturesamong the four batches of Shanghai’s Historic Buildings as the research objects to verify theaccuracy, science and operability of the identification criterion.
