As the acceleration of pace to balance urban and rural development and build a new socialist countryside, the society and economy have been developing continuously in the mountain areas around Sichuan Basin. However, this also results in the conflict between the demands of villagers to build a moderately prosperous society in all respects and the uncoordinated layout of rural settlement, and the conflict between the growing demands on land for construction use and basic farmland protection, all these make it the urgent needs for the scientific and standardized development of rural settlement and economic and intensive utilization of land resources. Therefore, it shall be with strong historical background and practical significance to study the reconstruction layout of rural settlement. In this thesis,40rural settlements with different scales in Bazhong City are investigated based on the central place theory by W.Christaller, systems theory and the harmony between human and nature theory by means of analytic hierarchy process, aggregative indicator method, cluster analysis and discriminant analysis. The current situation and problems in the development of rural settlements in the Mountainous Areas around Sichuan Basin are analyzed, and the rural settlements evaluation index system with grading and processing is established. In addition, reconstruction system of rural settlements is proposed. This study is mainly focused on the following issues:1. The analysis for the current status of rural settlement in the mountain areas."Small scattered settlements" leads to the messy and jumbled layout of rural settlements, the disappearance of traditional settlement characteristics leads to the loss of basic farmland, the "double light" results in the isolated development of rural settlements, assimilation of one-sided transition also leads to the insufficient optimization for rural settlements. In addition, homestead regulation of the rural settlements lags behind. 2. The establishment of rural settlement evaluation index system.22specific indicators that have impacts on the development of rural settlement are selected at five aspects such as the settlement scale of the status quo, the level of economic development, natural resource endowment, Settlement District-bit conditions, political/cultural/social relationship. The analytic hierarchy process is employed to determine the weight values, and it draws to the conclusion that the three most important factors including the status quo of the scale of rural settlement, the level of economic development, and settlement location conditions have a great impact on the weight.3. The performance of Empirical Analysis. Based on the estimation of the development of rural settlements in Bazhong City and the evaluation analysis, it draws to the conclusion that the overall development of rural settlement in Bazhong City is relatively lower, and there exist significant differences among the rural settlements. The clustering method and discriminant method are used to determine the level of the rural settlements, and to quantify the development of rural settlements at five levels, namely, the town-village-group-homes-household.4. The establishment of reconstruction system. A new set of reconstruction system including pattern reconstruction, morphological reconstruction, topology reconstruction and optimization of the reconstruction is proposed in light of the different level of rural settlements. To sum up, the reconstruction system estsblished on the level of rural settlement has certain practical significance on the specific operation of the rural settlement in the mountain areas around the Sichuan Basin. However, there also exist certain theoretical shortages in the reconstruction system which shall be researched and improved in the following study.
