Operation safety in a process plant is strongly related to human-machine interface design and human-machine interaction management based on the interface. The interface design is not a new problem. With mechanization, automation and electronic highly developed, the human factor in production has a growing influence and human coordination has become more and more important.People become to realize that the efficiency of the overall system in many cases is decided by human activity when manipulate and control all kinds of the manufactured high-performance machine systems. If the device does not play out full potential, the reason is probably that the operator cannot grasp the complicated operation of the equipment. Experiences and lessons remind people that more attention should be paid to the machine design so that the operation of the machine adapt to the capabilities of most ordinary people (operational).This article describes the background of human-machine interface involving the human-machine systems, human-computer interaction, the history of human-machine interface and so on. The article introduces the FBS interface design framework theory, EID social ecological theory, Proximity Compatibility Principle (PCP) and other theory with a detailed description and analysis. I design three interfaces of different types:Sophisticated interface, Semi-sophisticated interface, Non-sophisticated interface. Participants should complete three types of operational tasks in each type of interface, namely normal operation, fault detection and fault diagnosis.Through the experimental comparison, professional data analysis I concluded:(1) Sophisticated interface has the best performance in the normal operation and the fault diagnosis phase. Participants complete the task with the shortest time and the lowest mental workload on this type of interface;(2) In the fault detection phase, non-sophisticated interface has the lowest mental workload. But the time to finish the task has no significant difference on the three types of interfaces. Taken together, sophisticated interface has the lowest mental workload in the application of process equipment systems. It also has the highest security, so it is most popular. I proposed that in industrial process we should adopt the layout design of the sophisticated interface in order to reduce the accidents caused by unreasonable layout design.
