With the rapid development of China’s high-speed rail, intercity rail, urban mass transit and other emerging passenger transport methed, more and more cities started to build comprehensive passenger transport hubs, in order to integrate various transport modes effectively. Practice has proved that such comprehensive passenger transport hubs are not only physical carriers which can offer a variety of transportation services, but also play an important role in revitalizing the area and guiding urban development. Therefore, to evaluate the function of a comprehensive passenger transport hub in the operation and development of a city should not only take its transfer capability into account, but also consider that whether it can match the urban function of its surrounding areas and whether both of them can promote each other for mutual development, rather than become a bottleneck restricting the development of each other.However, there is little research which takes the comprehensive passenger transport hub and its surrounding areas as a whole and evaluates hub’s function while considering the relationship between the two as well, which caused many urban planning and construction of comprehensive passenger transport hubs divorce from the surrounding areas and consequently unable to exert the expected traffic function.Based on that, this paper attempts to study the traffic capacity of comprehensive passenger transport hub which can also be called "carrying capacity" by applying systematic theory and considering the organic connection of comprehensive passenger transport hub and its surrounding areas. The main work is reflected in:(1) The concept of "core area" of comprehensive transport passenger hub is proposed, and the method of defining the scope of "core region" as well;(2) This paper divides the core region of comprehensive passenger transport hub into three circling-zones (i.e. hub-transferring zone, hub-developing zone and hub-radiation zone) basing on the different characteristics of land development and traffic demand, then interprets the connotation of their traffic carrying capacity respectively in terms of supply and demand;(3) From the supply point of view, the transfer traffic carrying capacity model of hub-transferring zone as well as the distributing network traffic carrying capacity model of hub-developing zone and hub-radiation zone which considers parking constraints are established;(4) From the demand point of view, the calculation methods for the traffic carrying capacity of hub-transferring zone as well as the traffic carrying capacity model of hub-developing zone which considers the induced traffic volume because of hub and bases on the "Shared Parking Analysis Theory" are established;(5) Since the hub-transferring zone embody the traffic characteristics of the core region of comprehensive passenger transport hub best, this paper just construct two numerical examples of which in terms of supply and demand, in order to verify the feasibility of the models.Finally, this paper makes a brief summary to the achievements and shortcomings of the study, and puts forward a simple idea of the future further research directions.
