Transportation of solid bulk cargo has features of large traffic volume, stable and sufficient supply of goods and specialized kinds of goods, etc. It accounts for more than30%of the total volume in the shipping market. Different kinds of bulk goods have different impacts on the transportation safety, thanks to their different characteristics. The frequent accidents of bulk carriers, in the1990s, drew the International Maritime Organization’s attention, which led to the consecutive policies related to the transportation safety of bulk goods issued by IMO.In addition, there are lots of dry cargo ships and general cargo ships carrying solid bulk cargo. At present in China, there are numbers of non-bulk carriers carrying bulk cargo, along with several sinking accidents along the coast of China. Regard to the frequent accidents and the enforcement of IMSBC, it’s necessary to talk about the safe transportation of non-bulk carrier carrying bulk cargo. This paper mainly studied the Group C of solid bulk, without including bulk grain. Through overall analysis of the difference between bulk carriers and non-bulk carries, this paper found out the deficiencies of non-bulk carriers while they are carrying bulk cargo, and analyzed the possible damage to ship safety. After the overall analysis of the safety of non-bulk carriers carrying bulk cargo, this paper focused on the strength of the ship structure by modeling the ship’s hold structure by the method of the currently popular Finite Element Analysis. Through analysis of calculation results, to observe the stress and the deformation of cargo hold, and to make the comparison of the stress of cargo component when the ship carries high density bulk cargo and low density bulk cargo. The result shows that the stress of cargo hold components is small when carrying evenly low density of bulk, and it becomes bigger when carrying evenly highest density of bulk and the biggest stress is2.84times of the stress of carrying low density of bulk. It also exclusively analyzed some components to know their strength condition thoroughly. According to the analysis and simulation result, this paper suggests some advice on how to guarantee the safe transfer of non-bulk carrier carrying bulk cargo, including how to enhance the management of non-bulk carriers and how to ensure the strength of ship structure while it’s in operation. It is expected that this paper would play a guiding role in guaranteeing transportation safety of bulk cargo.
