The work of relay protection setting calculation on power system has importantsignificance for power networks operate security. It is one of the main the defensive line toensure the safe. On account of the oilfield thermal plant has many kinds of equipments andthe models of protection device are complex, the protective principle is a combination ofnational standards and artificial experience. This paper take the time to learned the history,current situation and future development prospect to design a relay protection settingcalculation system of oilfield thermal power plant.The main task of this paper is achieving the goal of relay protection setting calculationof oilfield thermal power plant to setting automatically, accurately and fleetly. By Using ofthis system, it can reduce the labor of relay protection setting people and improve theefficient of the workers. It also used to decreases the loss of fault then improves theavailability. The method of modularization is used to design the system. According to thefunction of the whole system it is divided to four modules to carry on the design respectively.The four modules are drawing module, Fault calculation module, Setting calculation moduleand management module.Primitive is used in the design of drawing module. The fault calculation module realizesnode numbering by using the improved node numbering optimization technique. artificialintelligence expert system is used in the design of setting calculation module. The settingcalculation module adopted the method of artificial intelligence expert system to setting theprotection automatic. Through improved the reasoning method of expert system reasoningmachine, the rapidity and accuracy of setting calculation have been raised and reduced theworkload of setting staffs. It has important application value for oilfield thermal power plantstable operation and reduces the loss of fault.
