The Logic In The Evolution Of The Western Marxist Dialectics

Lukacs’ Dialectics of Totality, Adorno’s Dialectics of Negative and Ollman’sDialectics of Internal Relations serve as the most important representatives in the processof evolution of the Western Marxist Dialectics.The Dialectics of Totality regards all various parts as organic and integralcomponents of totality. The totality is seen as a dynamic and historical dialectic processin which the subject and object interact and unite with each other. All the various partsare determined and dominated by Totality. The Dialectics of Negative is an anti-tradition,anti-system and anti-First theory. Though it is a critique of identity, it helps theestablishment of non-identity. Therefore,it is both a dialectical understanding and acritical theory of non-mandatory and non-identity. Its logic reflects a logic ofdisintegration; The inherent relationship dialectics means that the relationship betweenany thing and its other, the relationship between its present and its past and its future areinherent and intrinsic, and that both the two relationships constitute one part of the verything itself. Therefore, not only all things are located in a net of intrinsic relationships,but they themselves are each constituted by such complex relationships. Actually, socialreality is a whole that is constituted by such intrinsic relationships.The Dialectics of Totality emphasizes the role of the whole. While stressing thewhole, it neglects the individuals’ values; Dialectics of Negative liberates the repressedindividual, but the absolute negation excessively stressed and the neglect of the totalityleads it to the other extreme. Different from both the Dialectics of Totality and theDialectics of Negative, the Dialectics of Internal Relation, emphasizing not only thewhole but the parts, is both a negation of Adorno’s Dialectics of Degative and a reactionto Lukacs’s dialectics of totality at a higher level.The evolution from the Dialectics of Totality to the Dialectics of Negative and thento the Dialectics of Internal Relation constitutes the dynamic spiral process of negatingthe negation. This evolution occupies only one circle or one link of the dynamic spiralprocess of the evolution of Dialectics. This evolving process of Dialectics, with WesternMarxist Dialectics included, will last for ever.
