China is a multi-ethnic country, thereby ethnic minorities’ folk culture and artsbecomes a part of contemporary Chinese oil paintings. Within the hundred-yeardeveloping of Chinese oil paintings,“nationalization of oil paintings” has been beinga highly attractive topic. From a broader sense,“nationalization of Chinese oilpaintings” refers to the Coherentism tendency in local exploration of Chinese oilpaintings in the whole20century, whereas “nationalization of Chinese oil paintings”in fact is a regeneration process in which we combine local culture with oil paintings.Compared with western oil paintings, we Chinese oil paintings need more factors ofnational culture. The ethnic minorities’ folk culture contains rich artistic elementsand information, which makes an essential part of national culture and anirreplaceable chain of the process of “nationalization”. Taking the essence of ethnicminorities’ folk culture and art will help building a unique artistic pattern ofcontemporary Chinese oil paintings, which can become the main driving force of thedeveloping of Chinese oil paintings.In this article, we elaborate the backgrounds of the developing of contemporaryChinese oil paintings with comparative methodology in a thorough and systematicway. We will do a concrete analysis toward the history and status quo, shaping a clearclue of the developing process of contemporary Chinese oil paintings. Also, we willgive specific examples and researches in which ethnic minorities’ folk cultural andartistic factors have been used. We will also compare the ethnic minorities’ folkcultural and artistic factors, themes, and qualities used by artists.We discuss this topic under the background of “nationalization of oil paintings”.Appeared as an art trend, it stands in the complex modern China process wherepolitics, culture, and arts mixed. Using ethnic minorities’ folk cultural and artisticfactors in contemporary Chinese oil paintings is an important part of “nationalizationof oil paintings” with positive impression. China has rich and unique ethnicminorities’ folk culture and arts, which is helpful for corresponding to the languagesand styles of contemporary Chinese oil paintings and also develops the creationmentality of contemporary Chinese oil paintings. It foresees and greatly helps thedevelopment of Chinese oil painting with unique Chinese characteristics.
