The present research, based on Newmark’s classification of culture-specific words, reclassifies the culture-specific words in Jiang Rong’ Wolf Totem and the English versiontranslated by Goldblatt; and in light of Jef Verschueren’s Linguistic Adaptation Theory, the paper proceeds to make a systematic study on the translation strategies and methodsadopted by the translator, and elucidates how the pragmatic culture adapts to the linguisticstructures, physical, social and mental worlds in the dynamic process of translation. Theresearch finds that domestication is the main strategy along with the literal translation, transliteration, free translation and omission are used with high frequency. The paperconcludes by abstracting seven translation methods: literal translation, literal translationplus annotation, transliteration plus annotation, transliteration plus literal translation, freetranslation, cultural substitution and omission.
