The literature works written by Kazuo Ishiguro, a Japanese-born British novelist, are concerned and praised in the world of literature. Haruki Murakami likens Kazuo Ishiguro’s literature career to an immense painting. Every few years, he completes a new work and shows the map to us gradually. The map presents the theme that Ishiguro wants to tell readers through novels. Joyce Carol Oates points out it’s the ’lost’ and ’remains’. This paper will focus on the clue of theme:who has lost and what have been remained, and analyze Kazuo Ishiguro’s works in order to describe modern predicament vividly and reflect it continually, show its humanistic feelings, and finally dig out Kazuo Ishiguro’s literary innovation and aesthetic implication.In his works, two world wars and the ever-changing society after the war lead innumerable individuals who ’lost’ their lives irreversibly and whose unrecoverable psychological scars ’remained’ forever up to tragic endings, particularly those have no abilities to change where they have been living except for passive adaptation. Individual’s predicament including physical damage, degeneration of values and self-lost reflects one of the result of the modernization of society-modern predicament.In art technique of novels, Kazuo Ishiguro used protagonists’mind with ’fragmentary’ memory and the first-person ’unreliable’ narrative, reviewing ordinary people’s life experience and spiritual journey, so that it could make modern readers who have been living in a maze of modernization benefit and emotional resonance. Because these memories and narratives need to continue reflection and reinterpretation. What’s more, Kazuo Ishiguro posing himself as a international writer, being unique in the middle of cross-cultural writers make his novels have a special cross-study and experience sharing value.
