With the increasing popularity of Chinese study, people become widelyinterested in the connotation of this language. However, during the course of Chineseteaching to international students, Chinese characters have widely been regarded asdifficult to master because of the imperfect research in international Chinese teachingfield. This essay tries to elaborate on the application of six categories of Chinesecharacters, namely Xiangxing, Zhishi, Huiyi, Xingsheng, Zhuangzhu, Jiajie, recoredin "Shuowen Jiezi", an etymological dictionary by Xu Shen of the Han Dynasty".Furthermore this essay argues that the six categories, as the canonical Chinesecharacter structure theory and Chinese character construction theory, can effectivelyguide modern Chinese teaching as a foreign language. The first four categories, whichcontribute to Chinese character teaching, are essential to Chinese teaching.
