For the foreign students, especially those who have no background of Chinese character, the uniqueness of Chinese character has become the biggest obstacle in their learning of Chinese. Therefore, it is vital to overcome it and to help them to learn Chinese character.We always emphasize the specialty of teaching of Chinese character and ignore the value of traditional teaching of Chinese character when we teach them to foreigners. The theories adopted in teaching Chinese is mainly from research of English and they are not very suitable to Chinese. We consider Chinese traditional approach of teaching Chinese character and the method of Chinese character we teach pupils are valuable to teaching of Chinese character.Based on the two approaches and combined with the survey of three typical Chinese textbooks, this dissertation discusses the following aspects in the teaching of Chinese character:The method of teaching in crambo and the teaching of Chinese character. The method of teaching in crambo is the highlight of traditional teaching of Chinese character. This approach can make international students read short articles earlier. It doesn't emphasize writing and using but reading of the new words at first and it increases the study efficiency.The volume of lexical acquisition is an important index for evaluating the level of Chinese acquisition. After comparing the volume of lexical acquisition and words of Chinese students and overseas students', the author offers relevant suggestions: expand the volume of lexical acquisition and words; and the best approach is studying words through"zi".We should pay attention to sound symbols in pictophonetic characters teaching. Pictophonetic characters are the main parts of Chinese characters. The historical change of pronunciation of the Chinese character affects the function of the sound symbols. So we neglect the teaching of sound symbols. But the foreign students who have no background of Chinese character prefer to study meaning through the pronunciation of characters. At the same time, there is relationship between knowing pronunciation and knowing meaning. Sound symbols are useful to the recognition of pictophonetic characters.
