Publishing in Yan’an revolutionary base period (Yan’an period) is a fascinating phenomenon in themodern publishing history, both home and abroad. It was a special publishing pattern formed in particularhistorical background and developed its unique nature and characteristics, which served as an importantpart in Chinese publishing chain also as a link between the past and future, as it inherited the publishingtradition of the Central Soviet Area and opened a new era for Chinese publishing and formed thefoundation of Chinese publishing. At the same time, news publishing talents and philosophy were nurturedin this period, which undertook the Chinese publishing philosophical source and formed a fine publishingtradition, and influenced Chinese modern publishing direction. No developments can take place overnight, and it was also true of the publishing in Yan’an period, which grew out of nothing, from small to big. Though filled with twists and turns, ittook a prominentposition in Chinese Communist Party’s publishing history because of its unique value and influence, andfinally an important part in Chinese Communist Party’s publishing history. The course of publishing inYan’an period can be roughly be divided into three stages as follows:The period from1935to1939can be regarded as the early stage of the Yan’an publishing stage.Because of the war and the few writers, Yan’an publishing in this period basically inherited SovietRevolutionary Area’s publishing form and content, the political propaganda of which came before itsacademic nature. Although the arrival of the first group of intellectuals provided fresh blood for Yan’an’sart and literature publishing, its political nature didn’t change. In essence, as the main construction of earlyYan’an publishing, those numbered intellectuals were solders, and the purpose of their editing andpublishing was to meet the needs of war. Therefore, they were not strong enough to form the foundation ofpublishing as a whole. The period from1939to1941can be regarded as the booming stage of Yan’an publishing industry. In this period, Yan’an adopted liberal democratic atmosphere and active personnel policy and the prototypeof publishing was preliminarily built. The outbreak of Sino-Japanese war impelled a large number ofleft-wing intellectuals and progressive figures to go to Yan’an with zeal and expectation. Their arrival formed the foundation of Yan’an publishing industry’s construction and prosperity. Under the guidance ofthese intellectuals, Yan’an publishing industry stepped into a flourishing period and high-quality art andliterature publications sprang up like mushrooms, which embodied the unique personality and modernenlightenment consciousness of these intellectuals. However, there was some distance between thepublishing pursuits of these intellectuals and the demands of the Chinese Communist Party and therevolutionary war. Therefore, Chinese Communist Party began to deliberately guide the publishing industryinto the track of serving the revolutionary war and strong political forces inevitably intervened inpublishing industry. In the period from1941to1948, the central committee of Chinese Communist Party left Yan’an andit can be regarded as the third stage of the construction of Yan’an publishing. In this period, Yan’anpublishing industry shrank to some extent because of the severe living environment. Under the guidance ofspeech and to serve the war and workers, farmers and soldiers, Yan’an publishing industry carried outlarge-scale movements of sending intellectuals to the countryside and Yangko, a popular rural folk dance, adjusted its publishing strategy and formed a highly centralized publishing system. Under the regulativepolitical ideology, Yan’an publishing industry completed its essential transition and Chinese CommunistParty’s publishing industry was finally established. After the national revolution victory, this publishingsystem was spread across the country rapidly and affected the development of new China’s publishingindustry. In the publishing environment of the new century, there is some significance in the structural reformand development and sticking to publishing culture to revive how the older generation of proletarianrevolutionists and publishers overcame difficulties by all means, carried forward the arduous struggle spirit, and took publishing activities into practice in the severe environment of difficult material condition, lag inequipment and technology, lack of technological personnel and harsh publishing circumstance.
