This alticle discusses the narrative poetry as the important literary phenomenon in yan’an period, by analyzing the most representative works, “wang gui and li xiang xiang”from Li Ji and Ruan Zhang Jing’s “River of Zhang”.The article reseach firstly reviews the previous studies of the narrative poetry in yan’an period; then presents its themes, which is, the narrative poetry in yan’an period has inherited from the features of modern literature, especially followed after the “left-wing literature” and “popularity”. Meanwhile, it has adopted the form of folk art and functioned as the bridge of connecting the art and politics in revolution time.The main part of the study is divided into three chapters:The fist chapter mainly focuses on the formation of the narrative poetry in yan’an period from historical perspective. the fist section displays the discussion on “national form” led by the anti-Japanese war and states the limitation of “popularity” in poetry; the second section focuses on the complex fransformation from “intellects literature” to”folk art” which was reflected in the tendancy of war mobilization and implied certain ideological factors. the third illustrates how specificall it has come into being through the support of political parts and on what the writers experienced their lives in countryside.The second part points out that the production of the narrative poetry in yan’an period benefited from the support of the political party and the transformation of folk art. The fist section explains the popularity among the countryside. the narrative poetry absorbs the merits and also derelops new cultural pursuits by comparison with the old folk poetry. The section points out the significant feature of the narrative poetry in yan’an period, that is the new skill of portaiting story, a integrated combination with the form and content. The third section states out the major breakthrough of it. Examining from two aspects, a large number of new themes and constant adjusting among the problems encountered.The third part contains two sections. first it discusses the close connection between narration and lyrical expression. The theme of love is imerged in most of the poetry through the scenes of protesting, struggling, laboring and so on. It manifests its development toward a broader range and builds up the tie of politics and individual.second, the themes like the liberty of woman, freedom in marriage, associated with the revolution are all involved in the composion of the narrative poetry, inspiring and guiding the readers marching towards new life and establishing the recognition in revolution.
