This is a report on the translation of the15thChapter of A History of EnglishLanguage Teaching written by A. P. R. Howatt. This chapter, according to PeterNewmark’s Text-Typology, is an informative text which should be translated underthe principle of Communicative Translation and put the readers in the core position.Therefore, guided by Newmark’s Communicative Translation Principle and theInformation Maximization Principle, the writer takes the readers’ cultural background,information reception psychology, reception habits as well as cognitive competenceinto full consideration and adopts different strategies accordingly, eliminating thepotential reading obstacles and difficulties to reach the best communicative effect. Bydeeply analyzing the original text and introducing the various translation methods andstrategies adopted under the guidance of the principles of Communicative Translationand Information Maximization, this report aims to offer some practical translationprinciples and methods to the translation of informative texts. This report consists offour parts: the first part introduces the translation program including the background,object, significance and structure; the second part makes a thorough analysis of theoriginal text and its author; the third part includes the main difficulties and methods oftranslation; the last part summarizes the experience gained and raises some problemsto be solved, among which the third part will illustrate the main translation methodsby detailed examples, composing the core of this report.
