Kalidasa is a famous poet and dramatist in India, he lived in the45th century in Gupta Dynasty when Sanskrit literature reached its peak. Shakuntala is the most representative dramatic work wrote by Kalidasa. Domestic study about shakuntala is focus on aesthetic research, Character image research and Narrative art research. Overseas study based on aesthetic research and comparative research. Although there are many aesthetic research results, academic circles at home and abroad have been lack of comprehensive and in-depth view. This thesis is to explore the aesthetic characteristics of Shakuntala completely and systematically. Firstly analyses the type of beauty, the expression of beauty, and aesthetic effect, then explores the reason why the aesthetic characteristics can form, this is the Indian Sanskrit drama study, religious views and national character. Moreover the thesis ponders over the drama aesthetic type of Shakuntala and the aesthetic characteristics of Indian Sanskrit drama, which has originality.The body of this thesis is divided into four chapters:Chapter â…  summarized three types of beauty in Shakuntala, this is natural beauty, feminine charm and harmonious beauty. Natural beauty is represented by the vital power and holy in forest. Shakuntala is representative of the feminine charm who both has beautiful appearance and strong heart, she has blended into nature. The relation between human and nature, human and human, Brahman and I comprised the harmonious Beauty. These make up the beauty itself.Chapter â…¡ explores the poetic expression from the perspective of story design, sentimental style, Inner depict and poetic rhetoric. The poetic creation makes Shakuntala become unique.Chapterâ…¢ analyses the aesthetic effect of Shakuntala. Tragic element and comic element both exist in Shakuntala. According to western drama theory, Shakuntala is a comedy which fused tragedy elements. Based on the final verdict of drama aesthetic type, this part reveals the esthetic effect according to Indian drama theory.Chapterâ…£ explores the reason for the aesthetic characteristics. Indian Sanskrit drama study has a long history, Natyasastra and other theory works influenced the development of dramatic practice. Indian religion makes tragic element and comic element in Shakuntala. Indian characteristic is tolerant, so Kalidasa pursue the harmonious beauty in Shakuntala.In the last part, the paper summarized the aesthetic characteristics of Shakuntala, and compare Shakuntala with the story in Mahabharata. The author believes that Shakuntala is more aesthetic in character design and story design. Furthermore, inspired by this Sanskrit dramatic work, can find the aesthetic characteristics of Indian Sanskrit drama, such as the story of courtly love, the style of the fusion of sorrow and happiness, and the influence by Natyasastra.
