News is the information about recent events or happenings, especially as reported bynewspapers, periodicals, radio or television. News must be timely, accurate and informative.News translation plays an important role in culture exchange and communication. In recent years,studies have been carried out from several perspectives, including news translation theories andapplication, news translation criticism, news translation principles and so on. We have achieved alot in the studies of news translation.News falls into two basic groups: hard news and soft news. Hard news deals with theserious topics and events. Hard news refers to the news on politics, economy, science andtechnology. C-E translation of hard news opens the window for the foreigners to know today’sChina. Therefore, C-E translation of hard news study is definitely necessary and significant.The Functionalist translation theories are growing vigorously since the1970s. They focuson the text function, translation action, translation purpose and translation strategies. As a specialgenre, news text definitely has specific functions. So does the hard news. It is meaningful for thestudies of news translation to analyze the hard news text and to ascertain the text functions.In introduction, this thesis first introduces the research background and significance of C-Etranslation of hard news. The research questions, methodology and data collection are proposed,and the structure of this thesis is presented. As the research subject, the text of hard news isanalyzed in the second chapter. The definition of hard news and the linguistic, communicativeand cultural characteristics are analyzed systematically with examples. A contrastive analysisbetween Chinese and English hard news has been carried out to identify their similarities anddifferences. The current studies both at home and abroad are reviewed in Chapter Three. In thischapter, the theories of Functionalist translation are introduced, and the emphasis is put on theintroduction of the theory of Text Typology, the theory of Function-plus-Loyalty, and theirapplication to the hard news translation. The analyses in Chapter Four are carried out within thetheoretical framework of the Text Typology and the Function-plus-Loyalty. Four text functionsof the hard news are identifies: informative function, expressive function, aesthetic function andappellative function. In the translation process, the translation brief should be ascertained first.The translator should analyze the source text in terms of the intra-textual factors andextra-textual factors, and try to solve the translation problems and to overcome the translationdifficulties. With adequate examples, this chapter discusses C-E translation of hard news fromthree aspects: the headline, the lead and the body. Translation strategies and methods areproposed then. Chapter Five summarizes the major findings and limitations of this thesis. The prospects for future studies are proposed in this chapter.As a specific means of communication, C-E translation of hard news should achieve thespecific text functions and communicative purposes. On the basis of previous researches, withinthe theoretical framework of Functionalist translation, this thesis discusses the translationprocess and proposes the translation strategies and methods for the reference of news translators.
