The adherent was one kind of existence state and lifestyle which was chosen by theintellectuals in the replacement of dynasty. As compared to the loyalties died for the MingDynasty, the adherents were hard to search for their own survival values and significance.All of them had to do moral practices and mold personality in their whole lives. In thiscondition, life was a more difficult choice to the death.In the end of the life, Xu Fang proved to be an insistent, faithful and loyal adherent.At the same time, he was known as “three adherents of Ming Dynasty in Mainland” withShen Shoumin and Chao Mingsheng. Except for the identity of adherent, Xu Fang was alsoa lay Buddhist, an artist and a poet. But anyway, the most important core of his spirit wasfeelings of adherent. Xu Fang tried to lament his misfortune and suffering through thedifferent identities. This paper proceed with the life orientation of Xu Fang after thecollapse of Ming Dynasty. By analyzing the different identities of Xu Fang, this paper triedto find the hidden emotion and feelings of adherent. Group interaction took an importantpart in the forming progress of Xu Fang’s special character. The objective was to show thepath of Xu Fang’s life, after comprehensive analyzed all sorts of reasons, like the specifichistorical conditions, specific social background and specific group of adherents. To findthe character of Xu Fang in his articles and paintings.
