Chinese culture has a long and splendid history, especially in the Song dynasty,which is unprecedentedly prosperous. When the Block Walls Collapsed—The Urban Lifeof the Song Dynasty vividly describes the urban culture of the Song dynasty and citizens’way of life, which includes their value orientation, concept, social psychology, spice oflife, etc.This paper first introduces the book When the Block Walls Collapsed—The UrbanLife of the Song Dynasty and the C-E translation task, then the relationship betweencultural difference and translation is put forward. Second, it elaborates the process of thetranslation task and difficult problems need to be solved. The case study is the key part ofthe paper. It analyzes many examples that are difficult to translate from When the BlockWalls Collapsed—The Urban Life of the Song Dynasty due to the different thinkingmodels of Eastern and Western culture. To solve these problems, we have to deal with therelationships between parataxis and hypotaxis, simplex and complex, dynamic andstative, active and passive, concrete and abstract well. Then the rich and colorful urbanlife of the Song Dynasty can be reproduced and the purpose of cultural translation can beachieved.
