Conjunctions in Chinese and Vietnamese are a kind of function word. The number of words may be limited but in communication the usage frequency of these conjunction words is rather high. Conjunction usage in sentences is further complicated by the fact that they can express numerous meanings and relationships. Currently there are many problems in regards to the scope, classification, quantity, characteristic and standard criteria for differentiating conjunctions in Chinese and Vietnamese as there are many disagreements between scholars on this subject. On the surface the conjunction words of these two languages seems to be similar or nearly the same. However, many students continue to make mistakes when using these conjunctions as there are many differences between the conjunction words of Chinese and Vietnamese. It is for this reason that I believe a thorough examination of conjunction words of Chinese and Vietnamese can produce very useful and meaningful research. This thesis is based on previous research of Chinese and Vietnamese conjunction words. To begin, this paper will provide an overview of the present condition and extent of existing research and will then proceed to compare and contrast Chinese and Vietnamese conjunctions. The similarities and differences between Chinese and Vietnamese conjunction words mainly revolve around three fields, namely:Semantic, Syntactic, and Pragmatic. This paper will explore these three areas in order to broaden the research and figure out from complicated usages a more useful and general guideline of usage. In addition, this paper will also discuss the details of the contrast between conjunction words in which most of the focus is on those conjunctions which have a strong connecting function, high frequency of use or are held to be representative of the conjunctions compared. This paper has 3 sections in total, each section representing the three groups of conjunctions research as follows:First, a table to illustrate and juxtapose the comparative analysis of conjunctions related to relationshipsSecond, a form to illustrate the comparative analysis of conjunctions related to choiceThird, a table to show the comparative analysis of conjunctions related to continuity The goal of this paper is that the research and comparative analysis of both Chinese and Vietnamese conjunction words will be helpful in the field of Teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
