Defamiliarization, an artistic technique receiving wide attention in the literaryworld, demands that the translator should make proper efforts to transplant the specialnature of defamiliarization in the source text, prolong the aesthetic perception processand increase the aesthetic pleasure of the target reader. The proper handle ofdefamiliarization language is in effect the pursuit for heterogeneity of the source cultureand the intrinsic nature and certain requirements of literary translation for satisfying theexpectation of readers. The encoding and decoding of defamiliarization depends on theinterpretation from and restriction of context. During the course of translation, thetranslator should give full play to the advantage of the target language, enabling readersunderstand the strangeness and novelty of the source text and take into considerationthe social and cultural context of the source text, respecting the cultural differenceembodied in the symbols of the source language, thus keeping the handle ofdefamiliarization within proper control. Looking intohis works, we find that those defamiliarized languages and forms have closerelationship with the subject, the style and the emotion of the novel. So it means ademanding job for the translators to present to the targeted readers a good translation.Above all, the research attempts to draw more attention to the defamiliarization andits translation, contributing to enhancing the recognition of defamiliarization. Thequality of the translated text, consequently, can be well improved. Besides, the gloriousculture of Chinese can also be transmitted and spread effectively to the west, whichfacilitates the communication of different cultures.
