Research Of The Lacquer Furniture Under The Influence Of Chu Culture

Chu culture had been on the peak of ancient civilization, comparable with the ancient Greek civilization. The research of the furniture under the influence of such brilliant culture is important to carry forward the heritage of the Chu culture in modern furniture design. This thesis choose Chu state lacquer furniture as the major research object, besides, Jingzhou and Wuhan as the fieldwork locations,1investigate the Chu state lacquer furniture in the museums in this two places, the series furniture named’Feng Wu Chu Tian’produced by the only one company attempting to produce modern Chu style furniture, antique street of Chu culture in Jingzhou and Chu city in Mo hill around east lake of Wuhan.The paper analyzes the embodiment of specific customs and faith of Chu nation such as respect phoenix, value red, witch and so on, besides, the similarities and differences in the shape, color, surface decoration, craft and materials within Chu state lacquer furniture, the series furniture of’Feng Wu Chu Tian’and furniture influenced by other regional culture. Concluding the features of Chu state lacquer furniture, such as soft, slender curve modeling, decoration with abstractly deformed phoenix and great sense of witch patterns and strongly color contrasting by red and black,Basing these fundamentals, the thoughts of designing modern Chu-style furniture are explored. Under the direction of inheritance and innovation, from the perspective of home and public using space, giving suggestions concerning inheritance of essence soul of Chu culture in modern Chu-style furniture. Besides, combined with the features of Chu state lacquer furniture, exploring the improvement of Chu-style furniture from the three aspects of material, process and structure.
