Southern Shanxi Province, which belongs to the middle area of Yellow River, is located in,with eastern frontier relying on Taihang Mountains and southwestern reaching to the Yellow River.Its northern boundary is relatively nebulous, which could be roughly drawn along Lingshi andWuxiang. A large quantity of nobilities was endowed with their own nations hived to defense thedomination of Zhou Dynasty after its establishment. There were myriad nations hived of ZhouDynasty in Shanxi Province, many of which were controlled by Special Princes who were notrecorded. In accordance to archaeological analysis of Hengshui Graveyard in Jiang County ofShanxi Province, it belongs to―Peng Country‖, which was not recorded in historical materials. As aconsequence, it is of notably significance to explore the nationally physical considerations andracial types of Peng Country on the basis of studies of human skeletons.This dissertation includes eight chapters, which is based on research on the human skeletonsof Western Zhou Dynasty from Hengshui Graveyard in Jiang County of Shanxi Province. It is aresearch with different methods such as demography, anthropometry and ethnology.ChapterⅠ ExordiumIn this chapter, the geographical location and civilization of―Southern area of ShanxiProvince‖is introduced, the geographical and historical background of Hengshui Graveyard isdescribed, and the purpose and explanation theory of the paper is explained.ChapterⅡ A Study on the Population of Ancient Residents on the Human Skeletons fromHengshui GraveyardIn this chapter, the author discusses problems about age of death, sex ratio and burial formfrom the perspective of archaeology, demology, and biology.ChapterⅢ A Study on Morphological Characteristics on the Human Skulls from HengshuiGraveyardIn this chapter, the human skulls from Hengshui Graveyard are grouped according to ages andtombs’ directions, and the physique of westward and eastward group are studied as well ascompared by main metric and nonmetric characters.ChapterⅣ A Study on the Racial Type about the Human Skulls from Hengshui GraveyardIn this chapter, the human skulls from westward group and eastward group excavated fromHengshui Graveyard are studied and compared in terms of cranial race type.
