Greeting, as a beginning of social communication and a symbol of good manners, is the important mode to introduce the topic, vividly reflect the society and culture and to bridge the effective of communication, which plays a crucial role in building a harmonious and friendly relationship. During the process of communication, international students studying in China tend to make errors in comprehension and pragmatics, thereby hindering a perfect cross-cultural communication.The objects of this paper are Chinese greetings, which include the concept, characteristics, types and function of Chinese greetings, and some mistakes students studying in China made in using the Chinese greeting on the basis of the relevant theory, so as to propose correspondingly appropriate measures. First of all, we will comprehensively and deeply analyze Chinese greetings, classifying them into four types: the type of using terms of address, the type of using greeting terms, the type of using terms of scene and the type of integrating all the above. Then, this paper summarized characteristics of the Chinese greetings: conciseness, flexibility and diversity. Secondly, the significance and effect of Chinese greetings are emphasized in teaching Chinese as a second language from the point of view of Chinese pragmatics as a foreign language, the cross-cultural communication and teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Thirdly, the author of this paper, by investigating Chinese greeting terms in varieties of Chinese textbooks for foreigners, adopted quantitative analysis of errors that students studying in China committed and summarized reasons in pragmatic failure. Finally, we will draw a conclusion about how to arrange scientifically and rationally Chinese greeting terms step by step in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, editing Chinese materials for foreigners, choosing teaching methods, testing and evaluating.
