The Society of the Divine Word(SVD),founded by German Priest Arnold Janssen in1875at Steyl, a small village in the Nertherlands, is a traditional Catholic congregation. After its founding, it begin sent its missionaries to other countries and regions. In1879Johann Baptist Anzer and Joseph Freinademetz arrived in HongKong that initiated its missionary in China. They successfully established the first missionary in China, which included the south of Shantung:Yenchowfu, Tsining and Ichowfu. This region is the Cultural Shrine of Shandung and all of the China, and the influence of Confucian culture settled down in this place, when all sorts of elements were intertwined together, various social problems and contradictions began to accumulated in this place.Because The Society of the Divine Word came to the special area at the special time, A series of conflicts Continued to occer here.This article based on the English translated into German materials, the late Qing Dynasty archives, local historical datas, Boxer investigation of the oral history datas, and as the center of the missionary Joseph Freinademetz et al.and their missionary works in China,to explore Divine Word missionary activities in south of Shantung.
