This is a translation project report for “Rail and Property Development in HongKong: Experiences and Extensions” written by Robert Cervero and Jin Murakami.Translations of scientific and technological materials are categorized into pragmatictranslation whose main purpose is to convey information and maintain thecommunicative effect of the source texts. Functional theories or Skopostheorie to bespecific is the theoretical foundation of this paper. Skopostheorie is put forward byHans Vermeer and it claims that translation approaches should not be only based onthe analysis of source text and consideration of the expected function of its translatedversion should be highly emphasized. Hence, Skopostheorie lays the solid foundationfor pragmatic translation. In order to enlarge the applied range of Skopostheorie, thispaper elaborates and analyzes questions that the author encountered on the process oftranslation. Moreover, the author intends to explore the effective theoretical guidelinefor scientific and technological materials. The introduction is the first chapter that isconcerned with the background, literature review, structure, objective and thesignificance of the translation report. It is followed by Chapter Two introducing theauthor of the target material, main contents, linguistic features and evaluation of thesource text. Chapter Three analyses the items where translation problems may appear,elaborates preparation work and lists questions and intended solutions during theprocess of translation with specific examples. In Chapter Four, a conclusion of thistranslation report is drawn which included the experiences, lessons drawn from thisreport and problems remain.
