A Report On The Translation Of Science And Technology Papers Under The Guidance Of The Skopos Theory

As the first modern university of China,Tianjin University is dedicated to its internationalization.Thus TJU International Media Association(TIMA)was set up for the promotion of its remarkable achievements.Many crucial campus news and research papers were compiled and translated to issue on this platform with the expectation of enhancing international research communication and accelerating the research achievement transformation.Against this background,the Chinese-English translation of scientific and technical texts were chose as the graduation practice with the hope of summarizing some experience or rules about scientific and technical texts translation for subsequent learners and non-professionals.This practice is to translate some important Chinese papers into English versions.The content of these papers involves spatial construction,neurological rehabilitation and prone archaeology.During this process,more than 17000 Chinese characteristics were translated into English.The report is divided into four main parts.The first part introduces the background and content of this practice as well as the features of scientific and technical texts.The second part introduces the translation process,including the preparation,translation and proofreading.As the core of this report,the third part contains the Skopos theory and plentiful examples of how it can guide my translation practice.The last part is the conclusion,including the inspiration,achievements and difficulties during this practice.This translation practice enhanced my understanding about the guiding significance of translation theories—constructing a basic framework for translators to complete the whole translation.For example,the guiding principle of this practice report is the Skopos theory.“The Purpose Principle” of Skopos Theory requires translators to select appropriate translation methods according to the purpose of source texts.“The Loyalty Principle”requires that the translation should be faithful to the original content,which mainly includes three aspects of information: the logic,the semantics and the tone.“The Coherence Principle”requires that the translation should be consistent with English expression habits.Therefore,inthe process of translating scientific and technical texts,it is necessary to understand the basic differences of the lexical and syntactic grammar of English and Chinese.
