China is attracting more and more tourists at home and aboard, owing to itspicturesque natural scenery, charming historical and cultural resources. According tothe forecast of World Tourism Organization on June28th2007, China is set to becomeone of the world’s three largest tourist destinations by2020. Besides, foreignexchange revenue from inbound travel increases steadily. For instance, NationalTourism Administration released that foreign exchange income reached$48.464billion in2011by inbound tourists arrivals, an increase of5.78%compared to theprevious year. As a major channel providing tourism information, tourism text plays asignificant role in promoting tourist attractions, increasing Chinese tourism serviceand publicizing Chinese unique culture. As a result, the Chinese-English translation oftourism text has attracted increasing attention from translators and scholars.In recent years, Tianjin is taking effort to build its tourism image which can beillustrated as “the modern Chinese should be seen in Tianjin”. As a result, therequirement for translated tourism texts is increasing day by day. Tianjin has a longhistory. Archaeological finds show that people began to roam this land6000years ago.The city is abounded with stylistic architectures, former residences of celebrities, folkarts and local food, etc. In addition to its outstanding historical culture, Tianjin alsoboasts its unique natural scenes of beauty, such as, Haihe River and PanshanMountain—a5A level national scenic area. Unfortunately, people have failed to placeenough stress on the development of Tianjin tourism since it is shadowed by Beijingtourism and few researches on the Chinese-English tourism text from theoreticalperspective have been implemented.Based on Skopostheorie, this thesis takes tourism text of Tianjin as the studysubject, and three hierarchical rules including Skopos rule, intertextual coherence ruleand intratextual coherence rule as the breakthrough points. Meanwhile, with theanalysis of functions and features about Chinese and English tourism text, it proposesthat the translation of tourism text should aim at transmitting tourism information,attracting tourist and publicizing unique culture of Tianjin. Then, we can draw theconclusion that such translation can be efficiently directed by Skopostheorie.Moreover, a translational action is determined by its skopos; that is “the end justifiesthe means”. Therefore, in order to reach the intended skopos of tourism translation,the present thesis proposes some feasible translation techniques and methodsincluding transliteration, amplification, omission and reconstruction, which areapplied here to make the final translation readable, comprehensible and acceptable. With this research, the author hopes to provide enlightenment for those who devotethemselves to tourism translation by offering some regulations to follow and somerules to go by.
