With the development of the economy level and the increase of the leisure time, more and more people tend to choose traveling as their recreation and entertainment. Meanwhile, tourism seems unaware of finishing the obligation of transmitting Chinese culture. Tourism of Henan developed rapidly in recent years thanks to the beauty of the natural scenery and the abundance of the cultural resources. What's more, tourism text translation plays an important part in promoting the tourism industry. Therefore, how to enhance the translating ability and transfer the tourism information embedded in the tourism materials so as to appeal to more tourists is a painstaking job for the vast tourism translators.The thesis combs the historical development of the functionalist approaches and the German functionalists who contribute the most to functionalism. Thereafter, the author explicates the Skopostheorie and its three rules in detail.According to Skopostheorie and its three rules, skopos rule is the top rule. Translation is a purposeful activity and the target receiver is the decisive factor in translation action. Intratextual coherence rule stipulates that the target text should be readable and acceptable, understandable and meaningful to the target readers. The intertextual coherence rule requires that the target text should bear some connections with the source text and be loyal to it. And the loyalty depends on the skopos of the translation and the comprehending ability of the translator.The Skopostheorie provides a new perspective to the translation of Chinese tourism materials. Based on the Skopostheorie and its three rules, the author has an analysis of the tourism text translation of Joyful Tours of Great Henan in the fourth chapter of the thesis. In the first part of the chapter, the author makes a comparison from three levels of the tourism text translation in terms of language features. In the next part, the author has an analysis of Chinese tourism materials from the three rules of the Skopostheorie respectively. Through the analysis, we could find that the tourism text translation should be targeted on attracting foreign tourists to visit and promoting Chinese culture. The former requires the target texts should be meaningful and make sense to the target readers. Therefore, the translator cculd take the liberty of adapting and dealing with the tourism materials. The latter asks the translator to retain the cultural information embedded in Chinese culture as much as possible. All in all, the translator should follow the skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule so as to appeal to foreign tourists and transmit Chinese culture.The thesis also proposes relevant tourism text translation methods in order to achieve the intended translation purpose. The tourism text translation should be both target-reader oriented and Chinese-culture oriented. And the translating methods including literal translation, amplification, omission, explanation and transliteration plus explanation are adopted in the practice of tourism materials translation from the perspective of Skopostheorie.The thesis indicates that the application of the Skopostheorie would play a key role in the future tourism materials translation and other practical translations. With the research, the author expects the quality of the tourism text translation could be enhanced and the tourism industry in Henan and in China could be developed rapidly and vigorously.
