Chinese folk leagues with numerous members and branches are active as a mysterious force in China during Anti-Japanese War, it is the object that the Japanese invaders, the Chinese Nationalist Party and the Communist Party compete for. Among these leagues, the Red Spears Organization throughout the north and the northeast of China was especially influential. The Red Spears Organization was founded in the early20th century when those Northern Warlords are fighting each other, which gradually expanded to wider area with the North China Plain as its center but disappeared in the late1940s. As a matter of fact, though this organization once disappeared superficially in the1930s before the first half of the North China war,, it never stopped its activities and had been lurking in the folk, only some of its traditional practices were changed. With the outbreak of Anti-Japanese War in July1937, The Red Spears reappeared with the goal of defending the villages and their members’ own safety and it became the target of the political work of the Eighth Route Army, the Japanese invaders and puppet soldiers in the North China battlefield. Compared with the pure mission in the period of the northern warlords, The new Red Spears Organizaton has undergone significant changes at the critical moment: some members were determined to oppose Japanese invasion, some members gave up their fight with the Japanese invaders and still some others gave in to Japanese invaders and served as their accomplices. Faced with the two major powerful political, military forces, the Red Spears Organization had to make a tough choice between them. This was not only decided by its nature, but also deeply influenced by the strategies practiced by Kuomintang Government, the Communist Party and the Japanese invaders.
