The chongwen in Shuowenjiezi (short in Shuowen in the following), originally refers tothose1163chongwen which Xushen labeled clearly in Shuowen. However, after beingreworked and coped several times, Shuowen has change a lot.So during a long time, there aremany illustrations about chongwen’s definition, scope and the character number. Thechongwen study here refers to the character appended the seal character’s explanation and informs of ancient characters.It’s said that chongwen in Shuowen refers to the variant Chinese character.In fact itincludes the variant-forms, the ancient-forms and the interchange-forms of Chinese charactereven some the error-forms of Chinese characters.The reasons for Xushen listed chongwen in Shuowen are divided into two aspects:Objectively, it includes the character’s characteristics and social background at that time.Subjectively it mainly because of Xushen profound knowledge about Chinese character andstrong social responsibility.Chongwen’s significant influence on Chinese character’s research is the main researchaspect,by contrast,research in its value of Commentariology belongs to the minority.Chongwen in Shuowen has great influence on the research of Commentariology, which isdivided into3aspects. First,it clarifies the original meaning of the character or supplement themeaning or correct Xushen’s error illustrations. Second, it supplies evidences for old Chinesephonology’s research which is mainly involved in the research of initial consonant of aChinese syllable and the character’s belongings. Third, reveal the rule of character’schange.Chongwen in Shuowen,not only reserves a lot of ancient writing but also through therelationship between seal character and chongwen we can sum up some rules of the evolutionof Chinese character.
