A Study On The Exclamation Usage Of Interrogative Pronouns

The non-interrogative usage of interrogative pronouns can be divided into many varietiesand the usages are very complicated. The exclamation usage is more complex than othernon-interrogative usages. The exclamation usage of interrogative pronouns is a pragmaticusage in essence and it is one of the sentence expressions. It is one of the sentence functioncategory. The emergence of this usage is affected and restricted by many factors, especiallypeople’s emotional expression.People’s emotional expression can be simply divided into two types: positive expressionand negative expression. So the exclamation usage can be divided into two types: positiveexclamation and negative exclamation. The exclamation usage of interrogative pronouns has acomplicated relationship with non-interrogative usage of interrogative pronouns; especially itis more closely related with the nonspecific usage, the abstract usage and the negative usage.Because of conjunctions and adverbs that have exclamatory ability, so the nonspecific usageand the abstract usage are able to produce exclamation usage. The mainly reason that negativeusage can express the exclamation usage is mainly influenced by the pragmatic factors. Thenegative usage is pragmatic negative in essence. When it expresses the negative, it alsoexpresses some emotions.Not only due to conjunction, adverbs and pragmatic factors, but also the influence ofcognitive similarities, subjectification and focus and so on, the interrogative pronouns canproduce the exclamation usage. Pronouns and exclamation can be used the similar situationsthat things beyond their knowledge and experience, so the pronouns and exclamation havecognitive common features. When the interrogative pronouns can be used as exclamation,people are used to expressing their own subjective feeling. According to the theory of focus,whether interrogative pronouns express interrogative or express exclamation, they have nochoice to become the focus of the sentence, the difference between them is to emphasize thedifferent contents and the transformation is to follow certain rules. These factors are interactedwith each other and they promote the development of the exclamation usage together.
