The imbalance of the development of modern Chinese and Japanese honorificsmade the honorific became a problem in cross-cultural communication and translation.Only by fully understanding the differences and similarities of the form and pragmaticof honorifics can we appropriately expresses the corresponding respect.Therefore, the comparative study of Chinese and Japanese honorific system is notonly a research on honorific itself, but also has important theoretical significance andapplied value to deal with the problems in the intercultural communication andtranslation.Based on a literature study, this thesis pointed out the rich and amplified honorificsystem in Japanese and the unsystematically Chinese honorific system through narrativeand explanation of the imbalanced situation of honorific system in modern Chinese andJapanese. It also made a comparative analysis of the type, grammatical structure andpragmatic awareness of the honorifics and summarized the similarities and differencesof the honorifics in two languages.Main content:First of all, in the introduction part, it proposed the main content of the thesis andthe significance of the research. It also gave a literature review of Chinese and Japanesehonorifics both at home and abroad, points out their shortcomings, and explained thewriting of this paper and its research methods.Secondly, because of the different scope and types of Chinese and Japanesehonorifics, it made a strict definition to Chinese and Japanese honorific respectivelyand introduced the specific classification of honorifics on the basis of distinguishedacademics;Then, it described the development and imbalanced situation in modern society ofChinese and Japanese honorifics, and analyzed the causes;Next, it made a comparative analysis of Chinese and Japanese honorifics andpointed out their similarities and differences in types, grammatical measures andpragmatic awareness;Finally, it suggested that the inequivalence of translation is due to the imbalanced development of the honorifics in two languages, and summarized the comparison ofChinese and Japanese honorifics both from the perspectives of system structure andpragmatic awareness.
