In modern Chinese there exist six kinds of elements that compose a sentence:subject, predicate, object, attributive, adverbial and complement. in a modern chinese complete centence this elements follow as:(attributive)subject+(adverbial)predicate (complement)+(atrributive) obj ect(complement).Basing on this order, we can see that adverbials when being placed before predicate (including verbs and verb phrases, adjective and adjective phrases) function as modifiers for predicates. During our learning and teaching Chinese, we observe that Vietnamese students often conduct errors in using adverbials, especially their order in sentences.On the basis of previous research findings, this paper tries to study the contrast of the adverbials between Chinese and Vietnamese. By adopting the form of questionnaire and applying the methods of contrastive analysis and errors investigation, we have summed up the types of errors made by Vietnamese students in using the adverbials and found out the main causes of errors and finally put forward a number of teaching suggestions for overcoming the problem.The main focus of this paper is to contrast adverbials between Chinese and Vietnamese, basing on their positions and functions in sentences. Through this contrast, we found out that Vietnamese and Chinese share many common features as equally as different ones in employing adverbials. Specifically, adverbials stand before subjects in both Chinese and Vietnamese. However, Vietnamese adverbials can appear at the beginning or the end of the sentences or sometimes between the subjects and objects. In Chinese, adverbials can only be placed after subjects but when the sentences are translated into Vietnamese, these adverbials could either remains their function as adverbials or turned into compliments or objects.At the end of the thesis, we conduct error analysis based on the survey and investigation results and offer some teaching suggestions, in our hope, which would be useful for teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
