The history of both Tibet and Mongolia is an important part of the history of China. Thus it is necessary to acquire a correct understanding of the history of these two nations if one wishes to comprehend Chinese history and culture fully. However, the historiographical traditions of the Mongol and Tibetan people are quite different from ancient mainstream Chinese historical writing since they are authored from a Buddhist viewpoint of history. The most distinctive aspect of this view is the Tibetans’ idea that "Indians and Tibetans have a common origin" and the Mongols’concept of "a common origin of the Indians, Tibetans, and Mongols." This concept of history is the very source from which the Buddhist historical view of the Tibetan and Mongolian people derived and as such had far reaching impact on their historiographyIn China, Chen Yinque, Ulan, and Siduryu studied this topic, and so have Sha Bira in Mongolia as well as Japanese, German and Russian scholars. However, not much progress has been made in the field which is mainly due to a break in the textual and cultural transmission. The only method to overcome this hurdle is to find the missing texts and develop an understanding of traditional Tibeto-Mongolian culture. This is the central task in order to solve the problem and arrive at a correct scientific conclusion.Which text formulated this historical view for the first time? Why did the ancient Tibetans and Mongols believe they and the Indians hailed from a common source? What changes did historiographical ideas regarding the history of Buddhism undergo among the Tibetans and Mongols? And what meaning does this historical viewpoint have for the Tibetan and Mongolian nations? As soon as these questions will be answered, one gains a firm grasp on the lines along which the study of history developed among the Tibetans and Mongols. This is the aim of the present study.
