| Soft news, as a genre of important news, is rich in rhetorical devices and culturalinformation. Apart from conveying information, soft news appeals to readers’emotions through its special writing style. Obviously, the translation of soft news isquite flexible. And it is of great significance to make a profound study of thetranslation of English soft news.This thesis discusses the translation of English soft news in the light of PeterNewmark’s translation theory. First, the thesis surveys recent relevant studies on thetranslation of soft news and briefly reviews major studies on Newmark’s translationtheory before it points out the necessity of this study. Next, it makes an overall studyof Newmark’s translation theory (NTT), focusing on his semantic translation (ST) andcommunicative translation (CT), as well as on his text typology. What follows is anexploration of English soft news in terms of its definition, classification, features andtext type, which aims at helping translators do their work better. Then, with abundantexamples the author proves the feasibility of Newmark’s theory of text typology andillustrates the applicability of ST and CT to translation of English soft news.Moreover, under the guidance of NTT, the author proposes and verifies threetranslation principles: fidelity, readability and vividness，which may be regarded as anew attempt. Finally, the thesis conducts integrated analysis of the Chinese versionsof English soft news in order to further prove the practicability of NTT for translationof English soft news.In the light of the special text type of English soft news, translators are supposedto abide by the above-mentioned translation principles and adopt appropriatestrategies in the process of translation. This study is intended to offer some insightsinto the research on translation of English soft news and to help translators improvethe quality of soft news versions. |
