| Based on Peter Newmark’s translation theory, this dissertation discusses andanalyzes the translation strategies of the Chinese version of The Thorn Birds.Newmark proposes the Text Typology, Semantic and Communicative translation inhis classical work Approaches to Translation. Text Typology includes texts withexpressive function, informative function and vocative function. Serious literary workand other authorial texts are classified as the expressive text; technical report andtextbooks are included in the informative function. Vocative text comprises the politicalspeech, commercial advertisement and popular literature that aim to influence the mass.The Thorn Birds is a Saga novel written by the Australian writer Colleen McCullough,classified as the expressive text. But the informative and vocative texts also exist in thisnovel. The classification of the text types of Newmark is an ideal situation. However,there are various texts in the translation practice and the three texts coexist. The ThornBirds, the main text in the novel is the expressive text, but is analyzed from three texttypes.Translation strategy is an indispensable part to discuss translation issues. Wheneverpeople discuss translation strategies, they would mention the dichotomy. Semantic andcommunicative translation proposed by Newmark provides a new viewing point.Translation purpose, the situation of readers and text types are all considered in histranslation strategy. Newmark believes that people should use different translationstrategies for different texts. Translation strategies used in the translated version areanalyzed from the lexical, sentence and cultural levels respectively. In addition,omissions in words and paragraphs based on communicative translation strategy arediscussed with examples.Through the analysis, it comes to the conclusion that Newmark’s theory plays aguiding role in translation strategies for the fiction translation in the real practice. |
