A Study Of "Bu Shuo" From Multiple Perspectives

This paper focuses on conjunction “bu shuo”(不说) incontemporary Chinese. According to the meticulous description andanalysis from the diachronic and synchronic plane, this paper tries tomake some explanation in the lexicalization process of “bu shuo”(不说)and semantic and pragmatic functions of the “bu shuo”(不说)compound sentences. This paper is divided into six chapters, in additionto the introduction and conclusion, the body consists of four chapters.ChapterⅠ Introduction. Firstly, introduce the objective and thesignificance of this thesis, and then review and summarize previousresearch results. At last illustrate the theoretical methods and corpussources used in this paper.ChapterII, First of all, determine the status of word class of “bushuo”(不说),and discuss the characteristic of “bu shuo”(不说), andconcluded that “bu shuo”(不说) is a conjunction. Then, investigate thelexicalization process of “bu shuo”(不说). At last, discuss the foundationand motivation of the lexicalization of it.Chapter Ⅲ, Analyze the syntactic structure in the compoundsentences of “bu shuo”(不说). We summarize “bu shuo”(不说) can bein the sentence front, middle and back when it is in the previous clausesentence through the data statistics, and list the connecting languageunits by classification. At last research in detail the adverbs,conjunctions, and other forms often emerging with “bu shuo”(不说).ChapterIV, Analyze semantic correlation and semantic scalardifference between “bu shuo”(不说) compound sentences. Dig thehidden logic semantic relationship behind the dominant progressiverelationship, and divide the“bu shuo”(不说) compound sentences intothe objective progression category and the subjective progressivecategory from the objective and subjective point of view. Finally, we discuss the position-exchangeable between the front and back clauseof “bu shuo”(不说), and concluded that objective progressivecategory can not be changed, while the subjective progressivecategory can be changed when it is logical, and sum up the factorsconstraining the translocation are semantics and information structure.ChapterⅤ explore the subjectivity of “bu shuo”(不说) compoundsentences from the speakers perspective, and analyze pragmaticfunctions of “bu shuo”(不说) compound sentences according to theinformation theory, there are the introduction of the known informationand highlight the new information. It also studies discourse function fromthe type of cohesion and the communicative intention.ChapterⅥ Conclusion. Summarize the main content of the fullpaper and put forward the problems in the study and further researchidea.
