Liangji Hong is a famous scholar and writer in the Qianjia period of the Qing dynasty. His works of parallel prose is of great reputation in the middle of Qing Dynasty. Because of the previous long stagnation in the academic study of parallel prose, Liangji Hong’s achievement in this field draws little attention of the scholars of our age. Nevertheless, since the revival of interest in studying parallel prose in the classical Chinese field, the study of Liangji Hong’s works is in the progress of further development. In this thesis, through examining Liangji Hong’s life, the intellectual relationships with his tutors and friends, and the cultural context of his works, the contributing factors to the characteristics of his parallel prose style are carefully analysed. It is composed of an introduction, a four-chapter main body and a conclusion. In the first chapter, a brief account of Liangji Hong’s life is investigated, and overview the style of Liangji Hong’s parallel prose. In the second chapter, the influence on forming the three characteristics of his parallel prose works (the fresh and vigorous, the combination of Parallel and Prose, the erudite and tasteful), which derived from his intellectual relationship and travel experience, is fully examined. In the third chapter, the influence on forming the two characteristics of his parallel prose works (the magnificent and unconstrained, the original). In the fourth chapter, three kinds of sentimental characteristics presented in Liangji Hong’s works is studied, with a brief description of the cultural context, in order to further analyse the emotion-in-word characteristic that is embodied in his parallel prose style.
