In some researches, self-esteem has an effect on life and learning of junior highschool student as well shyness or adaptation to life does. There are complexmechanisms of action in three of them related to each other. This study will try toestablish a reasonable model to explore relationship of three variables. Using threemeasurement tools to test526students who are from the1st grade to the3rd in Raohemiddle school and the5th middle school, which are Rosenberg’s self-esteem scale, theshyness questionnaire prepared by self and the revised questionnaire of life adjustment..With analysis of statistical data by SPSS, AMOS and HLM, three kinds of mediationmodels were built not only at individual-level also cluster-level. One is the singlemediation model in which the shyness at individual-level partly mediated therelationship between the self-esteem at individual-level and the life adjustment atindividual-level. The2nd one is multiple-mediation model where the six factors of theshyness at individual-level respectively mediated the relationship between theself-esteem at individual-level and the life adjustment at individual-level. The3rd oneis the cross-level mediation-upper mediator (2-2-1) in which the shyness at class-levelmediated fully the relationship between the self-esteem at class-level and the lifeadjustment at individual-level. The results are showed as follow:1. Shyness questionnaire prepared by self, for junior high school student, has agood reliability and validity; the revised questionnaire of adaptation to life, for juniorhigh school student, has a good reliability and validity.2. Self-esteem has a significantly negative correlation with not only shyness alsoits six dimensions; self-esteem has a significantly positive correlation with not onlyadaptation to life also its four dimensions; shyness and its dimensions have asignificantly negatively correlation with not only adaptation to life also its fourdimensions.3. Self-esteem at individual-level significantly predicted shyness at individual-level and life adjustment at individual-level; shyness at individual-level significantlypredicted life adjustment; shyness at individual-level is a single mediation variable between self-esteem at individual-level and life adjustment at individual-level. Forindividual, less self-esteem and more shyness resulted in bad adaptation to life; theother hand, more self-esteem and less shyness led to good adaptation to life.4. Three factors of shyness had a multiple-mediation effect on relationshipbetween self-esteem and adaptation to life. They are shyness occurred at student context、shyness occurred at class context, and shyness occurred at parents context. In three of them, the1stone had a biggest respective mediation effect; the3rd one had the smallest respective mediationeffect. This means that because of shyness occurred at3kinds of situations, junior high schoolstudent in low self-esteem has bad adaptation to life.5. Self-esteem at class-level significantly predicted shyness at individual-level; shyness atclass-level fully cross-mediated relationship between self-esteem at class-level and adaptation tolife at individual-level. More class self-esteem and lower class shyness. This resulted in goodadaptation of individuals in his class. By contrast, less class self-esteem and more shy atmosphereof class, led to bad adaptation to life.
