The Study Of Phatic Communion In Chinese

The language is the carrier of exchanging information, which takes theresponsibility of transmitting information. At the same time, the language also assumesthe role of establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationship, and this is just therole of phatic communion. The first one who introduced the concept of phaticcommunion is a social anthropologist named Malinowski. He defined it as a type ofspeech only used for establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationship, not forexchanging information. But the current study, most scholars pay attention to the studywith society, describing the analysis of intercultural communication and translation. Forthe phatic communion itself, the research is not enough systematic. About the definitionand types of phatic communion, every scholar held a different view, which gives usmany spaces for our studies.In this paper, we collect many corpuses and make them into differentclassifications. We defines phatic communion from the angle of communication model,process and purposes, as follows: pahtic communion is referred to in the dialoguecontext, which includes two participates; it bases on the understanding the emotions,and its purpose is to transfer the emotional information, create a harmoniouscommunication or ease the communicative atmosphere; it’s a type of speech acts forestablishing, maintaining or terminating the communication, i.e., in the beginning of thedialogue, or in the connection session, or in the end of the dialogue, or purely to handlefor the purpose of the dialogue.From the perspective of Discourse Mode, the phatic communion is divided intotwo categories: program and non-program. We try to find the characteristics of phaticcommunion by comparison of the different types. And then, we study it from dialogues,analyzing its overall structure and local structure. Finally, we will study the conditionand the strategies of realization. I hope to grasp the phatic communion’s characteristicssystematically, and use it well to establish and maintain interpersonal relationships.
