Phatic Communion System Of Modern Chinese

This dissertation redefines the definition, the intension and extension, the constructes, the system and the subsytem of phatic communion of mo dern Chinese. All these researches rest on the numerous true language materials.This thesis also dissertates the basic functions of all forms of phatic communion and researches its usages and conditions. It's composed of 6 chapters as follows:Chapter 1 is the introduction. The reason and the significance of this research is explained from macroscopic,microscopic and application,and an overview on the phatic communion is given. We reexamine and redefine the definition, the intension and extension, the property and application, summarizes the research production. We find the main aim of phatic communion is creating social aura, keeping or breaking the social communion.At last,the train of thought of this research is mentioned and some important concepts and language materials are defined.Chapter 2 researches the named & informed phatic communion, includes it's basic types and their subtypes, usages conditions and functions.the basic types are appellation, salutation and some pronouns.The named & informed phatic communion can use alone as a whole communion or use with others as a part of communion. The constraint factors of usage have relevance to culture, society, history, region, age, sex and context etc. Expressing homage, exciting attention,recommending and introduceing are the basic function of named & informed phatic communion.Chapter 3 discusses the interrogatory phatic communion, includes it's basic types and their information structures, function feature and application. Firstly,the basic types are subdivided yes-no question phatic communion, wh-question phatic communion and alternative phatic communion. Secondly, we redifine the information, focus and function in phatic communion. We find that the information structure is multeity, the focus is inconstancy and the comprehension is relevance. Thirdly, we analyze the function feature and application of interrogatory phatic communion.The topic of interrogatory phatic communion is opened and the functions are compound which has twofold functions concurrently or onefold function sequentially. Finally,we parse the application of interrogatory phatic communion from the cultural adaptation and the question selection, compare the differences and reasons in the cultural background between the East and the West. We also analyze the features of quantity, distribution and application of interrogatory phatic communion.Chapter 4 is the exclamatory phatic communion. We research the basic types and their semanteme connotation and use strategies. Firstly, the exclamatory phatic communion is subdivided three types by semanteme content and emotion direction:opposite-directed exclamatory phatic communion, self-directed exclamatory phatic communion and third party-directed exclamatory phatic communion, and numerous examples are given. Secondly, the thesis analyzes and compare the semanteme connotation, the quantity, the categories and the positive-negative value.As far as the opposite-directed exclamatory phatic communion is concerned, its semanteme,quantity and the categories are the most abundant one,and it inclines to positive value. As far as the third party-directed exclamatory phatic communion is concerned,its semanteme is the least one and its emmotion inclination is alike the opposite-directed one which differ from the self-directed one. The exclamatory phatic communion has special functions such as benediction, acknowledge, salutation, reception, farewell, scolding and declinature etc. According to this conclusion, we can use ten important strategies such as greeting, praise, apology, joking, blessing and so on.Chapter 5 studies the statement phatic communion that includes the following three parts, the basic types, structure forms and usage disciplines. Firstly, the statement phatic communion consists of introduction & acknowledge, comment & declaring and farewell & acknowledgement. The quantity and proportion are collected and measured. It is find that the quantity of introduction & acknowledge phatic communion exceeds the total of the others and the farewell & acknowledgement is the least one. Secondly, the paper approaches the turn types of statement phatic communion under the theory of Discourse Analysis and emumerates the function combinatory forms of introduction & acknowledge phatic communion which appears as the beginning turn and the subsequent turn. We find that their function combinatory patterns are opened and unlimited. According to this conclusion, it suggestes that multiple function combinatory patterns and the best sellections should be showed and provided in TCF. Thirdly, the three constructure forms and connection patterns are reduced as sectional mould, shared mould and jogged mould which rests on the Three Worlds Grammar Theory of Professor Xiao Guo-zheng. We can arrange the phatic communion in TCF with the order of sectional mould, shared mould and jogged mould because the sectional mould is simplest and the jogged mould is the most difficult. Finally, the thesis provides three principles of how to use statement phatic communion as answer statement, which includes content conformance, style correspondence and information coorperation.Chapter 6 gives the conclusion. The contents and main achievements of this dissertation are summarized. Some issues with regard to phatic communion in modern Chinese are listed for further research which will be some topics of the author's future work and field. We think that paralanguage phatic communion is one important branch of phatic communion which be worth studying intensively, we also believe that the process and patterns of phatic communion are valuable to native language teaching,TCF and natural language processing.
