With the deepening of economic globalization, people has been more and more focusing on thestudents’ practical English skills and cross-cultural communication ability, except some basicknowledge. Under such circumstances, college English needs a new innovation. At present, asaffected by traditional utilitarianism, English had just become a tool for students to find a job aftergraduation. In order to improve students’ practical English skills and cultivate all-aroundhigh-quality talents, people begin to focus on general education.General Education, which is anti-utilitarianism and anti-professionalization, is aimed tocultivate people and citizens who are comprehensive in quality and competent in estimating value.General education course is an effective way to realize general education. College Englisheducation, as one important part of general education, should do some corresponding adjustmentsand innovation to its courses on the basis of general education. This can help college cultivateperfect students who have rich cultural heritage, high cross-cultural communication ability andunique thinking ability, so as to deliver more and more inter-disciplinary English talents to thesociety.Based on the field background information at home and abroad, the paper defines some relatedconcepts like the connotation and characteristics of general education, and sum up the category ofgeneral education course and new requirements for general education college English curriculum.The paper adopts questionnaire survey to analyze the current status of college English course settingfrom two aspects----college English course implement and affecting factors. It also makes thoroughanalysis about problems existing in present college English courses as well as its reasons. On thebasis of this, the paper makes systematic requirement analysis about college English course settingfrom both students and society requirements by looking up information from internet and doinginterview. Then, it puts forward some innovation strategies about college English course setting,including clear understanding about general education, diversified English optional and extendingcourses, new English course system, various teaching methods, construction of college Englishinvisible courses, internet English courses, English teachers and new English course estimation system, English teaching materials reformation, and so on.
