As an integral part of higher learning, College English is a public required basic course for undergraduate students. For the purpose of keeping up with the new developments of higher education in China, College English teaching reform should be carried out deeply and in a well-rounded way by integrating the objective of higher learning. By combining general education and College English teaching, research of the teaching reform of College English in such areas as teaching objectives, teaching model, course design, teachers’role etc. under the new situation from the perspective of general education is of significant theoretical value and practical meaning.In light of this, a combination of research methods such as consulting literature, case study, comparative methods, questionnaire survey, etc. is applied to carry out the research in the thesis in order to explore the general education based College English reform and attain the implication of general education in College English teaching. The whole thesis will be divided into four parts. Firstly, the introduction part raises the purpose and significance of the study and expounds related research findings about general education, foreign language teaching, and College English teaching from the perspective of general education at abroad and in China. Secondly, the thesis goes on to explore the historical evolution of general education in America, especially the several famous general education reforms in Harvard University. It is hoped that the practices of these general education curricula could provide some references for the reform of higher learning in China. The third chapter is the main body, which is further divided into three parts. The first part is concerned with the history and development of College English curriculum requirements to demonstrate the necessity of general education based College English teaching. The second part begins with an introduction to the questionnaire survey for the non-English major undergraduate students and College English teachers. The results are compared and analyzed from the perspective of general education to probe into the strong points and existing problems in the current situation of College English teaching and to explore the feasibility of implementing the general education based College English teaching reform. The last part is devoted to exploration of the general education based College English teaching reform with a case study of the practice of general English courses in the general education curriculum of Zhejiang University. The emphasis is laid on analyzing the practice of its general English courses from the perspective of curriculum design and teaching model.It is hoped that this research will provide some references for the teaching innovation of College English by exploring College English teaching from the perspective of general education.
