This thesis sets in the theory of General Education, and makes a study on the collegeEnglish curriculum design. A.S.Packard considers that General Education is a kind ofpreparative education that prepares for the professional study and is multiplied withclassical education, literary and science(1829). College English, being a public fundationcouse in this stage, should be connected with the connotaion of General Education, andthe college Eglish curriculum should be designed logically and sentificly.General Education is a college educational notion, and it is also a cultivation mode ofwell-rounded developed people. College English plays a very important role in carryingout the General Education. Being a compulsory basic curriculum to college students, thesubject nature, teaching objective and teaching content of college English have determinedthat it is a subject that can undertake the theory of General Education. To realize thecultivating goal of General Education, we should begin with the core domain—curriculumdesign. That requires us to put a reform on the domain of curriculum design.The thesis makes an analyzation of the existing problems of the Chinese colleges anduniversities’ English curriculum design, meanwhile, summarizes the reasons and thesources of the existing problems. Take the college English New Model of HebeiUniversity of Science and Technology as an example, the thesis makes a further analysison the charactristics and advantages of the New Model, in order to offer a referencialvalue for Chinese college English curriculum design in the perspective of GeneralEducation.With the guidance of teaching objective of College English Curriculum Requirementsthat Education Department has issued in2007and the requirement of “education shouldcultivate a group of international talents who have a good knowledge on the internationalrules, who can participate in the international affairs and international competitions”which is pointed out in National Medium and Long-term Educational Reform andDevelopment Program (2010-2020). The thesis offers suggestions of four aspects oncollege English curriculum design, in order to offer a referencial value for Chinese collegeEnglish curriculum design.
