The middle part of Shanxi province located in the transited area between Zhongyuan Culture Area and North Culture Zone. Seeing the current archaeology discoveries, During Erligang period, the lower reaches of Fen River, Hui River and SuShui River of the southern Shanxi province belonged to Shang Dynasty’s direct jurisdiction, The Shang Dynasty established a military city in Yuanqu basin; Dongxiafeng site and nearby areas was the main living area of Xia people, where was also an important area to Shang people. In these areas, we have found many early Shang Dynasty relics. Dated from late Shang Dynasty, due to internal and external causes which resulted in frequent relocation, the control to this area had been weakening gradually until to the end of Shang dynasty. The remains of Baiyan site suggested that from early Shang dynasty Shang culture had already reinforced important impact on the middle area of Shanxi province. But at the same time, in the Yuncheng Basin of Sushui River we have discovered almost no any more Shang cultural relics. Located in the middle and lower reaches of the Fenhe River and the western part of Taiyue mountains, Shang dynasty burials were discovered in Jinjie village of Lingshi County and Qiaobei village of Fushan County. The archaeology researchers had been discovering many ancient relics in the middle baisin of Shanxi province. For example, Fenyang county and Taigu county are rich in relics of Shang dynasty. The southeastern of Shanxi province was firmly controlled by the central government all the time during the Shang dynasty. The middle district of Shanxi province also located in the northwestern of Shang Dynasty. This region was very important to central goverment because of it’s strategic sense, the Shang Dynasty’s control of the middle part of Shanxi province was important to it’s rule on the eastern part.During a much long time, the archaeology activities most gathered in the southern part of Shanxi province. In2004, Gaohong rammed building bases were discovered, as well as the formal archaeology report of Jinjie Shang tombs in Lingshi county and the report of Archaeology of Middle Shanxi had been published in succession, these new materials provided new opportunities to make more progress on the research into Shang Dynasty relics of the middle part of Shanxi province.
