Objectives:(1) To investigate the current situation of sleep quality (SQ) of an engineering college students in the sample.(2) To discuss the relationship among sleep quality, emotional intelligence(EI) and coping style (CS) and analysis the influence that emotional intelligence and coping style put on sleep quality.Methods:The900freshmen from an engineering college of Hunan Province were chosen as research population by cluster random sampling. The Pittsbuigh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI), the Emotional Intelligence Scale(EIS), and the Coping Style Questionnaire were delivered to the college students. Classes were taken as units to do on-site survey. Eight hundreds and twenty sets of questionnaires were delivered, and876sets were back, among which831were valid. The age range of the college students is from16to22years old. The data were processed by statistical software SPSS13.0.Results:16.0%of engineering college students’sleep problem has been checked out. Daytime dysfunction, sleep quality and sleep time are top three problems of engineering college students when it refers to sleep quality. The overall sleep quality of the engineering college students is better than that of norm of the college students.(2) The PSQI scores of engineering college students are negatively associated with El scores of theirs(P<0.05).(3) The PSQI scores of engineering college students is negatively associated with scores of mature coping method theirs(P<0.05), and positively associated with scores of immature coping method theirs(P<0.05).(4) The El scores of engineering college students is positively associated with scores of mature coping method theirs(P< 0.05), and negatively associated with scores of immature coping and mixed type of theirs as well(P<0.05).(5) the emotional self-management, the emotional management of others, rationalization, emotional perception, the use of emotions in solving problems can predict PSQI score negatively, factors of self-blame, fantasy can predict PSQI score positively.(6) the emotional self-management, the emotional management of others, the use of emotions in solving problems have a direct effect to SQ; emotional perception, the emotional self-management, the emotional management of others, the use of emotions in solving problems indirectly affect SQ via immature coping.Conclusion:(1)16.0%of students have sleep problem in this sample. Sleep quality has no difference in demographic variables concerning gender, family structure and original district.(2) Factors of the regulation of emotion in oneself, the regulation of emotion in others, rationalization, emotional perception, the use of emotions in solving problems can predict PSQI score negatively, factors of self-blame, fantasy can predict PSQI score positively.(3) Engineering college freshmen who have high El are more likely to adopt mature coping styles which lead to high sleep quality; engineering college freshmen who have low El are more likely to adopt immature and mixed coping styles which lead to poor sleep quality.(4) El not only affect SQ directly, but also indirectly affect it via immature coping.
